Days leading up to the actual wedding day I always hear the same comment "I'm worried something will go wrong." The truth is something will probably not go exactly as planned. The key is to get things organized and planned out then delegate as much as possible. My background is not only wedding photography but large commercial photo-shoots. There are models, assistants, gear, food, clients, travel and then weather to consider. Using this experience I would like to offer a few ideas.
Schedule your Minutes
As every couple already knows there are many people involved in a wedding production. Create a production book. Don't go overboard. just type up a timeline of how the day wedding day should flow. Don't think its going to go exactly by the book but this way everyone at least has an idea. Don't just make it what you need, ask your wedding party as well. Is there someone that needs a ride from the airport? Talk to all your vendors and ask them what time they will arrive and what items they need as well. In your book have a couple information sheets. Phone numbers, maps anything that everyone needs to know. Remember this is a guideline not the rule book.
Where's the planner?
Wedding planners the day of the wedding are great, but not everyone has the budget. Make this another duty you can pass on. Don't make it an all day job. The idea it to have help from when everyone, including vendors, are arriving to the church to when when the reception starts. If you have a DJ they will mostly control the reception. Let your stand in planner have time to enjoy the reception. This person can make sure everything has arrived, make sure everyone knows its there time for photographs and be a liaison to let you know everything is going fine outside your dressing rooms.
Its Not My Job!
Remember to delegate. There are plenty of people willing to help. Don't be a boss. Ask friends to help out in areas you feel comfortable they can get every detail done for you. Then let it go and let them do it on their schedule. Remember the idea is making less last minute items that need your attention before the wedding. Try asking different groups of friends to take care of different areas. It doesn't hurt to ask.
When it comes down to it just relax.
Plan as best you can and ask for help. Then when the rehearsal starts just let it all go. From that point on it does not matter. You have taken all the steps you can take. I promise someone will be late, something will break and something will be forgotten. The wedding will not start without you and the only one who will know something is missing is you. And 5 years down the road you wont remember anyways. Its your day enjoy it.
